The Netherlands Arbitration Institute created the working group NAI Young Arbitration Practitioners (NAI Jong Oranje) in order to offer anyone under forty years old who is interested in arbitration a platform for discussing various current and practical topics. In an informal way, you can meet others who share your interest or have gained experience in the arbitration practice. Meetings are freely accessible to all. The meetings are introduced by arbitration specialists and there is sufficient opportunity to ask questions and have discussions. The speakers are always willing to answer questions and do not shy away from discussion. After the meeting, a drinks reception is organised, where you can broaden your network in the field of arbitration.
The meetings are not only interesting for attorneys; company lawyers, scientific staff members, members and staff of the judiciary and other interested persons can also broaden their knowledge of arbitration here.
On Thursday 5 July 2018 NAI Jong Oranje invites you to take part in the workshop:
Cross-examination of witnesses or experts is common practice in international arbitration. This whilst, cross-examination, as such, does not exist in the civil law tradition and is not part of the classic civil law education. NAI Jong Oranje is therefore very pleased to welcome Ms Lucy Keane who will give an interactive workshop on “The Art of Cross-Examination” at the Law Faculty of Leiden University.
Ms Keane is qualified as an advocate in Scotland, an attorney & counselor at law in the State of New York, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Ms Keane worked for more than 20 years as an advocate (barrister) at the Scottish Bar and has extensive experience in cross-examination in both civil and criminal cases (inter alia as senior prosecutor responsible for prosecuting serious criminal cases). Ms Keane also acts as an arbitrator and counsel in international arbitration procedures and has therefore vast experience in cross-examination within the international arbitration setting too.
For NAI Jong Oranje, Ms Keane designed an interactive workshop to give civil law lawyers the chance to deepen the understanding of cross-examination, to share experiences from practice, and to understand how to improve cross-examination performances.
15:00h Start workshop
18:00h End of the workshop
Leiden Law School (Kamerlingh Onnes Gebouw, room A.144). Drinks will take place at Café Babbels, Boisotkade 1 (Leiden).
